Jazz musician Coco Schuhmann was arrested by the Nazis as a Half-Jew “playing the forbidden degenerate music” and was deported to the concentration camp Theresienstadt. There the 17 year old was a member of the camp band “Ghetto Swingers”. Coco was sent to Ausschwitz-Birkenau and survived the extermination camp. But the gruesome memories continued. At the camp gate he had to play the popular song ‘La Paloma’ over and over again while, next to him, children were sent into the gas chambers.
